The importance of healthcare frontline workers has been highlighted in recent years. Darling is very excited to introduce you to one of the best, the formidable Dr Charlotte Rayner at the Cancer Centre London and Parkside Hospital. Her unmatched experience across healthcare is an inspiration to us all!
Dr. Rayner began her journey training in General internal Medicine and Respiratory Medicine at Charing Cross Hospital, the Royal Brompton Hospital and St. George’s Hospital London. Her MD thesis was undertaken in respiratory infection at the National Heart and Lung Institute. Previously a GMC assessor and Director of Training for General Medicine St. George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and for Southwest Thames region. Charlotte was Lead Clinician at Queen Mary Hospital Roehampton and for Respiratory Medicine and Lung cancer at St. George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Charlotte was also lead Clinician in Southwest Thames region for Lung cancer and Tuberculosis.
Dr Charlotte Rayner now works solely in the independent sector. She runs a rapid access service at Parkside that includes acute admissions and clinics for patients presenting with both general medical and respiratory symptoms. As part of this role she also undertakes rapid assessment for patients presenting symptoms which may suggest an underlying cancer diagnosis.
Charlotte’s research and clinical interests have covered aspects of respiratory infection, rapid diagnosis of patients with cancer, thromboembolic disease, chronic obstructive airways disease and tuberculosis. In addition, she has undertaken studies in sleep medicine, asthma and sarcoidosis. More recently she has undertaken studies looking at breathing dysregulation, which commonly occurs in association with respiratory and other medical conditions. She undertaken a review of anything she can do to help patients with thromboembolic complications and patients presenting other conditions through the Covid pandemic.
Charlotte works closely with the general surgical, orthopedic, and oncology teams providing expert general medical and respiratory assessment and treatment advice. She chairs the Acute Oncology Group and the Lung cancer MDT.
Charlotte is the Responsible Officer and the Associate Medical Director for Aspen Healthcare. She has contributed to the step up to safety campaign.
During the pandemic Dr Rayner was the medical lead for the Covid 19 response for Aspen, and was the London sector COVID medical lead for IHPN. She ran an acute medical ward at Parkside working in collaboration with St George’s NHS Trust.
Through the pandemic Charlotte has supported the well-being of patients and staff across Aspen healthcare . She has run a series of well-being interactive sessions for staff recognising the importance of holistic care in maintaining emotional and mental well-being. With her sons she has also undertaken some community outreach to support the mental health of teenagers raising money for STEM4 a local Wimbledon based mental health charity for teenagers.
Charlotte either walks or runs to work across Putney Heath and then Wimbledon common. Her family are farmers, she enjoys all sport, previously a player for and now a supporter of the Wimbledon hockey club. She is delighted that we are now all able to get back to the sidelines where she enjoys the emotional highs and loves watching her two sons on the hockey Astro.
