We sent our writer Matilda to Sheen Hair Salon on a colour and style appointment. She was after a natural and as gentle as possible colour transformation at this much appraised and award-winning independent salon in Richmond upon Thames.

Sheen have a fantastic autumn offer, now extended to see you through the festive season as well. See details at the end of this review.

“I don’t know about you, but I personally mark the end of summer as the 30th September. Although this may sound a little indulgent, giving myself a whole extra month of fun, I have justified it as paying back the lost summer months of the pandemic years. I have always found the end of summer and the start of Autumn as more of a paradigm shift than entering a “new year” and I often make somewhat erratic decisions in an effort to shift the feeling of impending doom that is winter approaching.

Sheen Hair Salon – natural choice for great colour

Perhaps this is why en route my appointment at Sheen hair on the 30th September, I spontaneously decided that I would have a good few inches cut of the length my hair as well as go blond and get a fringe. Thankfully, I couldn’t have been in better hands (could you imagine if this inspiration had struck at home after a few glasses of wine with kitchen scissors in hand).

Lisa was my stylist at Sheen and she understood immediately what had in mind and was able to perfectly recreate exactly what I was describing.

Sheen uses natural hair care products by Oway and Natulique which are certified organic, meaning that they don’t include abrasive ingredients. Most standard brands, even professional products, are a lot harsher on your hair. This is great as they can achieve blonde hair without the devastating effects of bleaching out the health of your hair. The colour process usually takes a little longer time to achieve your desired look, but is definitely worth it.

I think we have all realised in recent years that faster is not better or necessary (think fast fashion and Amazon for instance) and I think this logic certainly makes sense when considering the health of your hair.

To achieve my desired look I had a full head of highlights, cut and blow dry and I was so happy with the results. My hair gets 5* from me, and my friends, and the staff at Sheen so deserve it too. Everyone was so friendly and helpful and the salon really manages to balance the familiar local hairdresser vibe with chic sophistication in a relaxing and calm atmosphere.

If you too would like to change your look to stave off winter gloom, or if you would just like to get your hair done for less existential reasons, then I would highly recommend you book a consultation. The knowledgeable staff at Sheen’s work with you to achieve your hair goals, including a hair and scalp analysis with health advice and treatments.
