An extraordinary world on your doorstep
From this May, you are invited on a journey to explore a world of culture and creativity.
Kingston University’s Dorich House Museum and Stanley Picker Gallery and are both unique places that are free for everyone to enjoy over the coming months.
Two hidden gems within easy reach of Kingston Town centre, the Museum is beside Richmond Park on Kingston Vale and the Gallery sits on its own island on the Hogsmill River. Let our artists and designers transport you from Kingston to Russia, Singapore and beyond.
At Dorich House Museum
Dorich House Museum is a rare example of a studio home designed by and for a woman artist, the sculptor Dora Gordine. Completed in 1936, it was inspired by the places where Gordine had lived and worked. Born in Latvia, and brought up in Estonia, she worked in Paris and Singapore, before settling in Kingston with her third husband Richard Hare, the second son of the fourth Earl of Listowel.
Today, the Grade II-listed building houses a large collection of Gordine’s sculpture and artwork, together with a collection of Russian objects and furniture acquired by the couple throughout their life together. You can also enjoy guided tours, a coffee and cake from the studio café or picnic in the spacious grounds.
At Stanley Picker Gallery
Artist Ben Judd is exploring the history of Kingston and the River Thames through an art exhibition at the Gallery and a community boat project on the Thames called The Origin. The exhibition has been developed with students from Kingston University, local community groups and residents, and will feature a large climbing structure, historic images and magic lantern projections. There will be music and dance performances at the Gallery and the boat.
