Only two years ago, my advice would be that you need to carefully balance colour, space, light, aesthetic, ergonomics and consider the style and period of your house. Today, my answer is very different.
Bringing the outside in
Every single one of us, consciously or subliminally, are reducing our carbon footprint. Some more religiously than others but one thing is fact – almost every extension or house renovation includes Bifold doors, glass corner ceiling to floor windows or skylights. We are instinctively inviting the outside in.
Naturally, our living environment becomes lighter, so we gravitate to bolder and matt colours – various shades of greens, blues and autumn shades accentuated with textured wood. Gone is the gloss finish on anything, which is not eco-friendly either, so good riddance! Everything has become way more esoteric; if you love black – go black! That is a real trend right now, but don’t go there unless you have bifold doors, skylights or plenty of light as you may spiral into depression. Mix it up. Be bold. We are living in a bold era.

How to use Colour
Something to be mindful of is that if you ever want to freshen up your kitchen space with another spark of colour, allow your kitchen accessories to do this for you. By this I mean that you should think very carefully before choosing a brightly coloured glass splashback you later regret.
It is easier to change the colour of a t-towel, Nutribullet, light fittings, a few kitchens implements and your bar stools than it is to remove a green splashback.
With splashbacks – I recommend taking your worktop up the wall. Keep it simple. A few years down the line, you will thank me. Kitchen trends change so doing this will help you keep up with the times.
Porcelain worktops (commonly referred to as Dekton, Neolith and X-Tone) are all the rage and again leaning towards a greener world. Porcelain is a great deal more versatile than Quartz, which is made from synthetic resin, can scratch and spoil if you accidentally place something hot on the surface. Porcelain, on the other hand, can withstand temperatures up to 300 degrees Celsius and porcelain is also scratch resistant.
