Our Editor Marja-Leena experienced a full colour and style treatment at Headmasters.
Having your hair colour done by a new hairdresser is always slightly nerve-wracking I find, but this time I shouldn’t have felt any apprehension. I Headmasters as a leading colour specialists but had never been to their Kingston salon before. I had booked a full colour transformation, in my case a full head of highlights, and I needed to update my style with a great cut. My stylist was Scarlett and she put me at ease right away. She understood what I was after and was great at explaining what she recommended for my rather mousy looking hair. I soon discovered that Scarlett is an extremely knowledgeable and experienced senior stylist and colourist, even training other stylists in the latest colour techniques, trends and products.
My natural hair colour had totally taken over during the many lockdowns, when the options were either that or experimenting with home kits. I had stayed well clear of DIY hair colours ever since my experiments in my younger years resulted my desired Blondie look turning bright yellow, and eventually into a mop of dead hair that looked more like hay. I know only trust a professional to do anything drastic like colouring to my hair. I had for a while wanted to go more natural with warmer blond tones that are closer to my own hair colour and know that natural looking colour results are not easy to achieve.
Choosing the perfect colour that won’t damage your hair
Scarlett set to work defining the colour for my highlights using L’Oréal colour, mixed with Olaplex No2 Bond Perfector, a miracle product that rebuilds the broken bonds of the hair and protects the hair follicles from further breakage. It’s a revolutionary product used with colour treatments and blow-dries, in my case the most harmful ingredient was bleach, which at Headmasters has been ammonia free for a long time now. But before the colour would touch my hair it was treated with Olaplex pre-lightener to ensure that my hair tone would achieve the desired blondness.
After a relaxing 40 minute wait for the colour to take effect, and a chance to catch up with my favourite magazines, I was taken to the wash section of the salon and seated onto a fantastic reclining and massaging armchair. What a treat for my tense lower back – a result of too much sitting by my desk.
My favourite part of having my hair done has to be the wash, and the magical head massage that goes with it. Scarlett was fantastic at this too. Headmasters uses Kérastase shampoos and conditioners, and Scarlett also applied Olaplex No2 Bond Perfector for that extra protection which makes all the difference with a newly coloured hair.
It was finally time for the cut and a blow dry to reveal the final colour and my new hair style of course. I had initially thought of keeping the length more or less the same, but I’m glad Scarlett cut a little more than that and gave my fine hair much more lift with a classic bob. I was thrilled with the colour too. It is exactly the warm golden blond I had envisaged and brightened my whole face. The final touches were given with a hair curler, not something I do often as I’m not great at it, but will now attempt to achieve at home.
I love my hair at the moment! And I’ve had lots of compliments about it too. I think I’ve found my new favourite stylist and a fantastic salon. I will definitely go back to see Scarlett at Headmasters when my highlights need freshening and roots re-touching.
