Too many of us struggle to find what we want when looking for something in a wardrobe that’s cluttered and disorganised. When buying clothes we never actually wear is already a common problem in the UK, a wardrobe that’s hard to navigate shouldn’t get in the way of making the most of what you have and helping you looking your best in every season.
If you’re looking for a cleaner, calmer approach to organising your outfits, here’s some tips how best to do it.
Declutter by category
The best way to start reorganising a wardrobe is to remove absolutely everything from it and start on a blank slate. When you do so, it allows you to group each item by categories, for example, tops, trousers, dresses, shoes, etc,. This gives you an opportunity to see how many options you have for each item.
This also helps you to identify where you could shed some excess by selling or donating pieces you no longer need or want and, if you do decide to cut down on a category, having them all side by side will enable you to quickly compare and see which pieces still hold the most appeal to you.
Organise into zones
When returning and repacking the items in the wardrobe, do so intentionally, creating zones that reflect how often you’ll use them. Everyday items should be the most accessible, while seasonal or occasional pieces can be tucked a little further away on higher shelves or separate compartments as you’ll be reaching for them less frequently.
If you find yourself scrabbling around a special-occasion top every time you want to pick out a T-shirt, for example, that’s an easy route to making a mess.
Maximise your space
Wardrobes are always bigger than you think and you just need to use as much space as possible. Take advantage of drawer organisers, hooks and shelf dividers to access more of the wardrobe. You could also look into investing in fitted wardrobes that can be custom-built to your specific storage needs.
Hang strategically
Unless you are fortunate to have a vast enough wardrobe that everything can be hung up, you would need to make decisions about what items to prioritise when hanging. You might find it easier to plan what outfits you are planning to hang by including items of the same type, like trousers or dresses, so that you’re not disrupting things too much and keep things organised and easily reachable for any given day.
To keep your wardrobe tidy and satisfying by trying to use matching hangers and spacing your garments evenly to prevent overcrowding.
Maintain with regular audits
It is all well and good to get everything organised, but it can slowly slip back into chaos. It is important to remember to get yourself into a routine of auditing your wardrobe every few months or so. This will help you rotate through any more seasonal pieces and reassess items that no longer fit your style.
It’ll be less effort to do small pieces of maintenance semi-regularly than a big overhaul every time things get really messy.
