This month is filled with show-stopping performances and exhibitions, we are certain that there’s something for everyone in this rundown.
Longitude: Gatehouse, 1 North Road, Highgate Village
13th June- 7th July 2024
This musical explores the story of John Harrison, the genius who solved the problem of longitude and transformed seafaring forever.
A humble carpenter, Harrison invented a revolutionary clock, the marine chronometer, which could calculate longitude at sea. Opening trade routes and enabling safe passage across treacherous waters. This fascinating performance explores John’s work and endeavours to save lives of those that were being lost at sea.
The Dao of Unrepresentative British Chinese Experience: Soho Theatre, 21 Dean Street
19th June-13th July
Premiering at Soho Theatre this June, this psychedelic, semi-autobiographical, punk and rap theatre experience, explores race politics, mental health and personal testimony.
The Dao of Unrepresentative British Chinese Experience challenges the British Chinese stereotype of the high-achieving, polite, and invisible individual. Through a blend of disruptive music, multimedia and range of performs this hilarious, yet touching performance explores the depths of addiction, recovery, art and activism.
Romeo & Juliet: Guilford Castle Gardens
21 June-13th July
This summer, one of the greatest love stories of all time will explode onto the streets of Guilford.
Audiences will be immersed in Shakespeare’s gripping tale of love and sacrifice. As the story unfolds across Guilford, the site-responsive show provides an exciting twist on the familiar tale. This performance is a real testament to the community, alongside Guilford Shakespeare Company’s’ professional cast, the performance features young people from local schools, and colleges, GSC’s Drama Club and Drama Club for Young Carers. Alongside the main production GSC are also creating a knife crime awareness programme.
ArgCom Fest– Shoreditch Town Hall
5th-7th July
“London’s greatest comedy festival returns” for 3 days this July, with big names and up-and-coming newcomers taking the stage.
Previewing exciting shows heading up to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and a spectacular, star studded Friday Night Show. ArgCom is undoubtedly this London’s summer hotspot for comedy. Guests can enjoy a whole weekend of fun for £49, just go along for the day for £34, and enjoy The Friday Night Show for £20.
Real Rooms of the Museum: Museum of the Home, 135 Kingsland Road
Museum of Home’s world-renowned Rooms Through Time galleries overhaul, reveals new stories that represent the many communities surrounding the Museum.
The exhibitions explores complex histories of migration and identity that have shaped modern Britain from 1870 to now. The four new rooms include a Jewish tenement from 1911, bedroom of an Irish couple in the 1950’s, a British-Vietnamese contemporary kitchen, complete with sensory additions, and a Future Room exploring what people’s home might look like amid future challenges.
Without Walls– England Tour
21st June- 29th September
Featuring captivating and innovative productions, Without Walls is touring public spaces across England this summer.
The variety of 13 artists will tour across Without Walls festival partners: Brighton Festival, Hat Fair (Winchester), Norfolk & Norwich Festival, Stockton International Riverside Festival, Timber Festival (Staffordshire), Certain Blacks–Ensemble Festival (London), Just So Festival (Cheshire) and Greenwich+Docklands International Festival. This year’s programme explores multiple themes and genres, including accessibility and inclusivity, sustainability, music, circus, dance, street theatre and installations.
