Teenage mental health charity stem4 has snagged a prestigious Digital Leaders 100 Award for its life-changing App Library, helping 1.5 million young people around the world manage their anxieties and learn positive coping mechanisms. With such an incredible woman at its helm, we’re not at all surprised.
According to the NHS, one in eight young people present at least one diagnosable symptom of mental illness. Mental health has become a tremendously important topic in these Covid times, and there’s no doubt that stem4’s research, resources, and App Library aimed to enhance early understanding of mental illness and signpost towards prompt action and intervention have helped many individuals.
Developed in 2016 by Wimbledon-based clinical psychologist Dr Nihara Krause, stem4 identified the widespread use of mobile phones as a potential means for change. Today, the stem4 App Library – Calm Harm, Clear Fear, and Combined Minds – continues to support over millions of people globally with managing self-harm, controlling anxiety, and supporting mental health. And as of October 2020, the charity is delighted to have won ‘Tech for Good Initiative’ at the Digital Leaders 100 Awards for these apps.
‘This is a very prestigious award to be nominated for, let alone making it to the final three and going on to win. We are hugely grateful to HMA Digital, all those who voted for the stem4 apps during the public stages, and to Digital Leaders 100 for their support. Most of all, we are delighted to have been able to successfully support young people in managing their mental health digitally, through effective evidenced-based apps, in a year where access to support and services has been even more difficult,’ Dr Nihara says.
The Digital Leaders 100 Awards celebrate the individuals and organisations from public, private, and non-profit sectors who are demonstrating a pioneering and sustainable approach to digital transformation in the UK. Winners of all 10 categories were announced on the 15th of October 2020 in a digital ceremony. In the ‘Tech for Good Initiative’ category, stem4 was up against the MeeTwo app and Octopus Energy, organisations who have both made an astounding difference.
