43% of Britons believe dogs should sleep in bed with their owners, according to a YouGov survey.

Five possible drawbacks of co-sleeping with pets 

1. Allergies, hay fever, and asthma 

One significant concern is the potential for aggravated allergies or asthma as pet dander, fur, and saliva are common allergens that can trigger reactions. In fact, allergy medication Allevia reports that one in four Britons are allergic to animal dander, making it the UK’s third most common airborne allergy following pollen and dust. Even if owners are not currently allergic to pet dander, prolonged close contact may increase sensitivity over time. As such, it’s important to consider the possible health impact of co-sleeping with pets especially for individuals with existing respiratory issues. 

2. Hygiene concerns 

Pets carry dirt, bacteria, and parasites into the bedroom. Outdoor pets, such as cats and dogs, are especially likely to bring in contaminants like mud and pollen or fleas, ticks, and mites. While regular professional grooming may lower the likelihood of this, co-sleeping with pets always increases the risk of unhygienic sleeping areas.  

3. Transmission of diseases 

Furthermore, there is also a risk of zoonotic diseases being transmitted through close contact. Infections like ringworm or certain parasites can pass from pets to humans easily, and while the risk is relatively low, it’s important for pet owners to be aware, especially if they have compromised immune systems. In 2023, the Telegraph released an article explaining that dog owners are more likely to have sleep disorders. This is most likely due to their movement, noise, or demands for attention during the night. While comforting, co-sleeping with pets may encourage territorial behaviour. Pets, such as dogs, might become possessive of the sleeping area, which can lead to aggression if others approach. According to the Sleep Foundation, contact with pets increases the release of oxytocin, known as the ‘love hormone’, which promotes feelings of relaxation and well-being. This can be especially beneficial for individuals dealing with anxiety or high stress, providing a sense of security throughout the night. 

2. Strengthened bond 

Co-sleeping can strengthen the bond between an owner and their pet as close physical proximity during rest periods enhances feelings of trust and affection. Pets are generally social animals, and co-sleeping can reinforce their sense of belonging within the family unit, possibly leading to better behaviour as pets feel more secure and connected to their owners. 

3. Improved sleep quality 

While co-sleeping may worsen sleep for some people, the presence of a pet can equally improve sleep quality for others. The familiar, soothing presence of a pet may help individuals fall asleep faster and achieve a more restful sleep. This can be particularly helpful for those who experience insomnia, as the companionship provides comfort and eases nighttime restlessness.

Pets provide unwavering emotional support and having them close at night can alleviate feelings of loneliness or depression. Their unconditional love and companionship can contribute positively to mental health, making a significant difference in overall happiness and well-being.

Pets offer warmth and physical comfort during sleep as their body heat can make the bed cosier, especially during colder months. With the energy price cap rising by 1% as of January 2025, this presence can enhance sleep quality and save owners money on heating bills, turning bedtime into a cherished routine for both pets and owners.

1. Maintain regular veterinary check-ups 

Owners should keep their pets up to date with vaccinations and regular health screenings. This ensures they are free from parasites and illnesses that could affect the owner’s health. Also, regular flea and tick treatments are essential to prevent infestations.  

2. Create a designated sleeping space 

Establish a specific area on the bed for the pet. This can be a pet bed or a blanket placed at the foot of the bed. It helps to set boundaries and reduces disruptions during the night, allowing both owners and their pets to sleep comfortably. 

3. Prioritise hygiene 

Owners can regularly groom their pets to reduce shedding and dander. Additionally, they can also wash their bedding frequently to maintain cleanliness and reduce allergen build-up. 

4. Train your pet 

It helps to discourage behaviours that can disturb sleep, such as excessive movement or playing during the night. By being consistent with training, owners can promote better sleep patterns for both them and their pets. 

5. Consider individual health conditions 

If an owner suffers from allergies, asthma, or a weakened immune system, they should consult their healthcare provider before deciding to sleep with their pet. The healthcare professional may advise against it or suggest precautions to minimise health risks.
