In the world of high fashion, few names evoke a sense of bold elegance and cultural fusion quite like BARRUS. Known for its sophisticated silhouettes and intricate detailing, the brand has carved a unique niche by seamlessly blending Eastern craftsmanship with Western design sensibilities.

In this exclusive interview, we speak with the creative force behind BARRUS Neslişah Yılmaz — a visionary whose passion, heritage, and relentless pursuit of excellence continue to redefine modern luxury.

From the inspirations that shape each collection to the challenges of building a global brand, this conversation offers an intimate look into the mind of the designer shaping the future of fashion.

Let’s start at the beginning—what inspired you to create Barrus, and what did you set out to express through the brand?

Barrus was born from a deep desire to bridge the elegance of Eastern heritage with the sophistication of Western couture. I wanted to tell stories through fabric—stories rooted in culture, craftsmanship, and powerful femininity. From the start, it was about more than just clothing; it was about identity, memory, and the modern woman who honours her past while shaping her future.

What does the name “Barrus” mean to you personally, and what kind of legacy do you hope it leaves in the fashion world?

“Barrus” is symbolic—it represents strength, bold femininity, and rooted elegance. Personally, it reflects my inner journey and the cultural mosaic I come from. My dream is for Barrus to be remembered as a brand that celebrated heritage with grace, modernised tradition without erasing it, and empowered women through thoughtful design.

Barrus is known for fusing Eastern heritage with Western elegance—how do you balance these two influences in your designs?

It’s an instinctive process. I don’t see them as opposing forces but as complementary energies. I might begin with a traditional motif or textile from the East and reinterpret it using modern silhouettes, tailoring, or Western minimalism. The balance comes through storytelling—where one culture doesn’t overshadow the other, but instead creates harmony.

What’s your background? What did you do before founding Barrus?

Before Barrus, I immersed myself in both business and design. I studied fashion, but I also gained hands-on experience managing creative projects and understanding market dynamics. This blend of artistic and entrepreneurial experience shaped how I built the brand—with a vision that was both strategic and soulful.

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY & CREATIVE PROCESS

 —

Can you describe the creative journey behind a Barrus collection, from initial concept to final garment?

It usually begins with a feeling, a place, or a story. I often start with research—whether it’s ancient symbols, architectural details, or sensory memories like a scent or song. From there, I sketch, choose fabrics, and work closely with artisans. Every piece is touched by hand, and the process is deeply collaborative. It’s alchemy—turning ideas into something wearable and emotional.

What are the recurring themes or cultural references that continue to inspire your work?

Istanbul is an eternal muse—the textures, the contrasts, the layers of history. You’ll often find references to Ottoman art, Anatolian patterns, and ancient craftsmanship in my work. Florals like erguvan (Judas tree) or motifs like tulips and tiles often return, subtly reimagined. Memory and place are at the heart of every collection.

How important is craftsmanship and artisanal tradition in your production process?

It’s absolutely central. Without craftsmanship, fashion becomes disposable. At Barrus, we work with skilled artisans who understand the integrity of fabric, embroidery, and construction. Each garment carries not just beauty but the soul of the person who made it. That’s something machines can never replicate.

FASHION & IDENTITY

  —

Who is the ‘Barrus woman’? How do you envision her feeling when she wears one of your designs?

She is elegant, intelligent, and unapologetically herself. The Barrus woman walks into a room and owns her space—not loudly, but with quiet confidence. When she wears Barrus, I want her to feel connected—to her roots, her strength, and her story.

Fashion is such a powerful medium for storytelling—what aspects of your heritage do you most enjoy weaving into your work?

I’m endlessly inspired by the poetic chaos of Istanbul—its textures, scents, and contradictions. I love weaving in subtle references: the curve of a tulip, the geometry of an Ottoman tile, the scent of sumbul, or the deep magentas of erguvan trees in spring. These aren’t just decorative details—they carry emotional resonance. For me, fashion is a language, and through it, I speak of ancestry, memory, and femininity. I don’t just design garments—I tell stories women can wear.

What does sustainability mean to you?

To me, sustainability begins with intention. It means designing pieces that are meant to last—emotionally and physically. It’s about choosing quality over quantity, honoring slow craftsmanship, and respecting the people behind the garment as much as the planet. It also means preserving cultural traditions and techniques that are at risk of disappearing. True sustainability is holistic—it’s not just about materials, but about meaning.

BUSINESS & GROWTH

What has been some of the most pivotal moments in Barrus’ growth so far?

There have been several turning points, but one of the most defining was presenting Barrus at London Fashion Week. It marked our transition from a dream to a respected brand on an international stage. Another major milestone was seeing women from different cultures connect with our story—whether it was a Middle Eastern royal wearing our kaftan or a European editor selecting our couture dress for a cover shoot. These moments reminded me that fashion is universal when it’s sincere. More recently, collaborating with Art de Huile to create aromatherapy-infused scarves has opened an entirely new path for us.

How do you manage the balance between staying creatively inspired and running a fashion business?

It’s a delicate dance between instinct and structure. Creativity needs space—it doesn’t thrive in chaos or over-scheduling—so I carve out time to disconnect, travel, read, or simply observe. At the same time, running a business requires focus, strategy, and discipline. I’ve built a strong team around me, so I can lead the vision without losing myself in logistics. Inspiration fuels the brand, but the business sustains it—both need equal respect.

What advice would you offer young designers looking to enter the industry with a brand rooted in culture and heritage?

Start with deep research—know your roots before reinterpreting them. Don’t treat heritage as decoration; treat it as meaning. Be patient. Building a brand with soul takes time. Surround yourself with people who understand your vision—not just the market. And most importantly, stay authentic. Trends pass, but truth resonates.

 LOOKING FORWARD

What’s next for Barrus? Are there any new markets, collaborations, or collections on the horizon?

Yes—this year is incredibly exciting for us. We’re expanding into new regions, particularly the Middle East and North America, where there’s a strong appreciation for craftsmanship and cultural narrative. We’re also launching a groundbreaking collaboration with Art de Huile, merging fashion with aromatherapy.

Imagine scarves that carry not only beauty but also a therapeutic scent inspired by the soul of Istanbul. And we’re exploring textile innovation—our upcoming collection includes pieces that shine in the dark using nanotechnology. We’re telling stories through all the senses.

If you could see anyone wearing Barrus, past or present, who would it be—and why?

I would love to see Queen Rania in Barrus. She embodies everything the brand stands for—grace, intelligence, strength, and cultural pride. But I also dream of dressing women who aren’t famous—women who carry history in their eyes and elegance in their posture. The woman who wears Barrus doesn’t need a spotlight to shine.

Any challenges you’ve faced and overcame that you’d like to share to inspire others?

There were times I was told to make the brand “more commercial,” to simplify the stories, to follow trends. But I refused to dilute the identity of Barrus. The challenge has always been staying true to our cultural depth in an industry that often favors surface over substance. It hasn’t always been easy, but staying authentic has been our strength. My advice: if your work has meaning, don’t shrink it to fit into someone else’s frame.

Is there anything interesting we don’t know about you that you’d like to share?

I design with scent as much as with sight. Fragrance has always guided my memory, my emotions, and even the mood of a collection. That’s why we’ve started incorporating scent into fabric—it’s a very personal dream becoming real. I’m also deeply inspired by ancient rituals and healing practices.

Sometimes my sketches begin with a poem, a piece of music, or the way light hits a stone wall in Ephesus.

What is your most favourite or inspiring quote?

“Create with intention. Dress with meaning. Live with memory.”

Or, from Rumi—one I return to often:

“Try not to resist the changes that come your way. Instead, let life live through you.”
