The influence of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is expanding across Coaching, Personal Development, and Professional Communication. The theory behind NLP originated from Psychology and Linguistics. Simply put, NLP is based upon the concept that people’s thoughts, conversations, and behaviour follow certain patterns, and by identifying and understanding those patterns, we can produce significant, measurable change more quickly and efficiently than before.
Coaches are finding that using NLP helps them develop a better understanding of their clients ’ internal world and enables their clients to obtain long-lasting results.
Historically, Coaching has been centred around goal setting, accountability, and reflective questioning. While all of these have value for developing new ways of thinking and acting, they do not account for many of the underlying subconscious beliefs, habitual use of language, and emotionally driven behaviours that shape our actions.
NLP provides the coach with a set of tools that help them understand the client’s experience processing, forming beliefs, and responding to obstacles. By addressing issues at this deeper level, coaches can enable their clients to redefine limitations, improve self-awareness, and take action with increased clarity and confidence.
Research and real-world applications are showing that the use of NLP as part of a coaching model produces quicker breakthroughs and superior results than traditional coaching models. The ability to build rapport, recognise language patterns, and assist clients in reframing their beliefs enables coaches to deliver more customised and productive coaching sessions.
In addition to understanding what they would like to change, clients now understand how to make the changes necessary to be successful at both a cognitive and emotional level.
