The Wimbletech CIC project was founded in October 2013 to solve a simple but pressing problem. Its founder, then running a mobile app startup, was struggling to find an affordable and inspiring place to work. Splitting time between coffee shops across London and a small rented room in Wimbledon, affectionately nicknamed “The Appcave” – he sought a local, collaborative space where like-minded people could work, connect, and grow together.

After an extensive search, he discovered an underused meeting room above Wimbledon Library. Recognising that libraries needed new ways to generate income, attract visitors, and strengthen community engagement, he proposed a mutually beneficial partnership.

The idea was simple: transform underutilised public spaces into vibrant, affordable work and community hubs. This vision became the foundation for Wimbletech CIC.

Today, Wimbletech CIC partners with libraries, councils, and community builders to reimagine underused spaces and enhance local ecosystems. In just over ten years, the initiative has generated more than £1 million in new income for libraries and partners, supported local economies through job creation and spending. They have also hosted nearly 1,000 community events, and provided affordable workspaces for thousands of professionals who live and increasingly work locally.

The organisation’s ethos is rooted in collaboration and shared success: the world is brighter when we work and shine together.

Wimbletech CIC continues to expand its impact, recently earning recognition from the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), which awarded a grant to grow the Workary concept with up to five new sites across London and beyond.

Those seeking an affordable local workspace – an alternative to home offices, coffee shops, or long commutes, are invited to book a tour and quote “Darling Magazine UK” for a free trial.

Wimbletech CIC also offers flexible, fully equipped venues for community events, team meetings, and workshops, complete with private booths, high-speed Wi-Fi, refreshments, and 100” presentation screens for groups of up to 50 people.
