Valentines is a short hop away. Couples respond in a number of different ways. Some of us feel the pressure to make it something special, the perfect date, whilst some of us consider it a commercial enterprise. What I know having worked with many couples is it is not the grand big gesture that creates a good relationship.

It really is about how we truly connect with each other and the quality of that connection. Wether you celebrate Valentines or not it is a good time to refocus on the small things you and your partner can do that strengthens your love relationship.

The secret to all strong  relationships is the quality of our connection. Here are three simple ways to bring more connection into your relationship this Valentine’s Day. I call this your relationship scaffolding, simple ways to create relationship stability.

Fully Present Date Night

Its so easy to drift into an evening and simply go through the motions, same old same old. When we choose to be intentional about our time with our partner we can create a moment where it is easy to feel connected. Create your next date night—whether at home or out—to truly engage with one another.

Put the distractions away, have a real conversation, by being curious and listen carefully and you will create an experience that fosters connection. Even a simple dinner can feel special when you’re fully present.

Try Something New Together

Want the love to ratchet up a notch? Research shows that when we do something totally new together, it amplifies relationship satisfaction. This Valentine’s Day, get creative! Take a cooking class, explore a new restaurant, or even turn your living room into a cozy movie night with a film neither of you have seen. Novelty keeps the spark alive.

Tiny Moments, Big Impact

Real intimacy is created in everyday interactions. Take 60 seconds to tell your partner something you love about them, or stop what you are doing and give your %100 attention when they reach out for connection. A warm touch, a heartfelt compliment, or a moment of laughter together means more than any grand romantic gesture.
