Too many of us struggle to find what we want in a wardrobe that’s cluttered and disorganised, perpetuating an already common problem in the UK is that most of us buy clothes we never actually wear. A wardrobe that’s hard to navigate shouldn’t get in the way of making the most of what you have and looking your best in every season.

If you’re looking for a cleaner, calmer approach to organising your outfits, here are some tips of how:

Declutter by category

The best way to start reorganising a wardrobe is to remove absolutely everything from it and start on a blank slate. Group each item together by categories (tops, trousers, dresses, shoes, etc.) so that you can see how many options you have for each. This makes it easier to identify where you could shed some excess clothes by selling or donating pieces you no longer need or want. If you decide to cut down on a category, having them all side by side will enable you to quickly compare and see which pieces still hold the most appeal to you.

Maximise your space

Wardrobes are always bigger than you think and you just need to use as much space as possible. Take advantage of drawer organisers, hooks and shelf dividers to access more of the wardrobe. You could also look into investing in built fitted wardrobes that could be custom made to your specific needs.

Organise into zones

When repacking your items, it is ideal to do so intentionally, creating zones that reflect how often you’ll use them. Items you will need and use on an everyday basis should be the most accessible, while seasonal or occasional pieces or those pieces you will use less frequently, can be tucked a little further away on higher shelves or separate compartments.

If you find yourself scrabbling around a special-occasion top every time you want to pick out a T-shirt, for example, then that’s an easy route to making a mess.

Hang strategically

Unless you’re lucky enough to have a vast wardrobe space that can accommodate all your pieces and where everything you have can fit into your hanging space, it is important to decide and prioritise what could be hung and what could be folded to ensure you maximise your space. You might find it easier to plan your outfits by hanging same types of items, like trousers or dresses, so that you’re not disrupting things too much on any given day.

Using matching hangers and spacing your garments evenly, are some best ways you could keep your wardrobe tidy, not crowded, in order and satisfying.

Maintain with regular audits

It’s all well and good getting everything organised but it can slowly slip back into chaos again, so look to get into a routine of auditing your wardrobe every few months or so. This will help you rotate through any more seasonal pieces and reassess items that no longer fit your style.

It’ll be less effort to do small pieces of maintenance semi-regularly than a big overhaul every time things get really messy.
