As winter draws near, the world’s finest Christmas markets are proving that the festive spirit has no borders. From Central Europe to distant capitals, these markets are drawing travellers with their luminous lights, artisanal stalls, and atmospheric settings.

In Hungary, the fairs at St. Stephen’s Basilica and Vörösmarty Square in Budapest have secured a place on a prestigious list of best-in-the-world Christmas fairs compiled by CNN. The basilica market in particular, illuminated with 3D light-shows and backed by centuries of tradition, is chosen for its “magical atmosphere”.

Meanwhile, in Poland, the Christmas market in Gdańsk has been voted Europe’s best for 2025. A combination of art, theatrical performances, lights and artisan wares has earned it more than 90,000 votes in a continental survey, firmly placing it among the world’s most compelling holiday markets.

Germany, long regarded as the birthplace of the modern Christmas market, continues to lead. The Nürnberger Christkindlesmarkt in Nuremberg, dating back to the 17th century, remains one of the most iconic, offering around 180 stalls of crafts, decorations and regional delicacies.

And in Austria, the handful of markets in Vienna are proving wildly successful. Despite economic headwinds, local Advent markets have drawn crowds and generated significant revenues, making the city a major player in the global festive market scene.
Why these markets are rising to the top
- Heritage and setting: Many markets are framed by historic squares, churches or city halls, creating scenes that feel timeless and enchanting.
- Artisan craftsmanship: Local stalls offering handmade decorations, regional treats and unique gifts give each market a distinct character and sense of place.
- Immersive experiences: From light shows and live performances to gourmet tasting and interactive elements, visitors get the full Christmas event.
- Accessibility and trending appeal: Online search interest and social-media presence are rising, with markets like Gdańsk achieving significant viral traction.
Planning your festive market journey
If you’re considering visiting one of the world’s top Christmas markets, here are a few practical pointers:
- Book accommodation early: The best-known markets often fill hotels months in advance.
- Travel midweek to avoid the biggest crowds and enjoy a more relaxed experience.
- Dress for cold weather and comfortable walking shoes; many markets are outdoors in open squares.
- Try local specialties (glühwein, roasted nuts, regional pastries) and bring home at least one handcrafted souvenir.
- Check exact opening dates and times; many markets begin late November and run through December, though durations vary by city.
