Wimbledon Quarter is set to undergo further redevelopment works following the approval of extensive public realm and landscape improvements along Queen’s Road, Wimbledon. The London Borough of Merton granted planning permission last month, marking a significant step forward in the revitalisation of the area and the creation of a more inviting and dynamic public space.

A key aspect of the approved plans include a single-storey ground-floor glazed extension to the former Magistrates’ Court. Designed to be sympathetic to the heritage of the area, the extension will carefully consider the surrounding streetscape and the adjacent listed buildings, preserving the architectural character while delivering modern enhancements.

Additional works include:

  • Widening of the pavement in front of the former Fire Station and new entrance to Wimbledon Quarter, resulting in a shortening of the current bus lane (which will have no impact on the bus route along Queen’s Road).
  • Improvements to and enhancements of the public realm with new paving, additional planting to include seasonal planters and shrubs and cycle stands along Queen’s Road.
  • New external seating areas along Queen’s Road to support both al fresco dining and general public use.
  • Increased lighting along the streetscape and to the historical building facades that line it, highlighting architectural points of interest.
  • Improved step-free pedestrian access to Wimbledon Quarter from along Queen’s Road.

With the recent opening of The Fire Station Café and new restaurant accommodation available within the former Fire Station and Magistrates’ Court, Queen’s Road is expected to become an inviting and vibrant culinary destination for the local community.

Alexander Woolf, COO, Romulus said:

“We are delighted to have received planning approval for the public realm works to Queen’s Road and would like to thank the London Borough of Merton.  These improvements align with our ongoing efforts to create an inviting and dynamic space at Wimbledon Quarter for the local community and we hope that this, along with the enhanced pedestrian access, additional landscaping and commitment to preserving Wimbledon’s rich history, create an enjoyable and attractive destination for residents, businesses, visitors and future generations alike.”

Merton Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Civic Pride and Climate Change Councillor Eleanor Stringer said:

“Wimbledon town centre is a thriving hub for our community – for all those who live, work or visit the area. The planned improvements reflect what we know residents want from their town centres – wider pavements, more greenery and updated street furniture – creating a spacious and attractive area along Queen’s Road that showcases its beautiful, listed-building facades.

“These works will open up more space for people to eat, socialise and enjoy time together, as well as creating an innovative environment for new businesses such as cafes, bars and restaurants to thrive – bringing new amenities and job opportunities to our area.

“We’re excited to see this work progress in a way that preserves the area’s character for the benefit of local people, and boosts civic pride for everyone in our borough.”

Work on the improvements are expected to commence in early 2026, with completion scheduled for later that year.  More details will be shared in due course.
