Oxford Street: The Grand Opening
On Monday 3 November 2025, London’s busiest shopping boulevard became the earliest and arguably most spectacular stage of the holiday season. Stretching over 1.2 miles, Oxford Street sparkles under 5,000 illuminated stars composed of around 300,000 LED bulbs, a display that has become symbolic of the city’s Christmas kickoff.
The lights shine every evening until early January (and turn off at 11 pm in the interests of energy efficiency). This year’s display continues its partnership with the Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity (GOSH), making each glowing star part of a bigger cause.

Regent Street & St. James’s: A Corridor of Angels
Just a few days after Oxford Street’s switch-on, Thursday 6 November marked the lighting of Regent Street, Piccadilly, and adjacent areas with the “Spirit of Christmas” installation.
Here, more than 300,000 low-energy LEDs form elegant, wing-like arches stretched over the thoroughfare, creating a luminous tunnel that feels as much an art installation as festive décor.
Carnaby Street: Colour, Creativity & ‘All Is Bright’
In the heart of Soho, Carnaby Street is known for doing things a little differently, and this year’s theme, All Is Bright, promises to be bold. The lights switched on on Thursday, 6 November, and the installation is billed as a celebration of optimism and vibrancy, with over 60,000 LEDs illuminating the street.
It is pedestrian-friendly and the perfect choice for a relaxing walk in the heart of London.
Covent Garden: Theatre-Town Transformed
On Wednesday, 12 November, the historic Covent Garden piazza unveils its festive guise. A 55-foot spruce will take centre stage, surrounded by some 300,000 twinkling lights, giant golden bells, oversized baubles, and mirror balls.
With the district’s rich theatrical heritage, the 2025 theme is titled The Theatre of Christmas. Expect live performances, pop-up bars, and plenty of photo moments to match the décor.
Kew Gardens: A Walk Among Lights
For a more immersive experience away from the city centre bustle, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew transforms into a luminous wonderland from 14 November 2025 (running through early January).
Eight brand-new artworks, including an illuminated Great Pagoda and LED “lily-pads” floating across a pond, await. With hot drinks, toasted marshmallows, and serene reflections on the water, it’s one of the most magical festive trails in London.

Planning & Practical Tips
- Timing matters: Arrive during the first hour of darkness to enjoy the lights at their best before the crowds swell.
- Weekday evenings are generally less crowded than weekends.
- Combine stops: You can walk from Oxford Street → Regent Street → Carnaby in one evening if you’re ambitious.
- Dress warm: Evenings are chilly, wrap up and wear comfortable shoes.
- Public transport is best: These hotspots get busy and parking is limited.
- Camera ready: The best photos often happen just after dusk, when sky and city lights balance beautifully.
