Western allies coordinate defence measures as Russia and China condemn military action and the UN urges immediate de-escalation

International leaders are scrambling to contain the rapidly escalating crisis involving Iran, as Western allies move toward closer military and diplomatic coordination while rival global powers condemn recent strikes and warn of wider war.

France, the United Kingdom, and the United States are now working in intensified coordination following Iranian retaliatory missile attacks across the Middle East, marking a significant alignment among Western governments as security concerns deepen.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer confirmed that London has authorised the United States to use British military bases for defensive operations aimed at intercepting Iranian missile threats. He said the decision was taken to protect British personnel and regional allies amid ongoing attacks.
Starmer described the move as part of collective self-defence, adding that British aircraft were already involved in intercepting missiles targeting allied positions in the region.
In a joint statement, the leaders of France, the UK and Germany condemned what they called Iran’s “indiscriminate” retaliatory strikes and pledged closer coordination with Washington and regional partners to safeguard civilians and strategic infrastructure.
French President Emmanuel Macron urged restraint while warning that further escalation could destabilise the entire region, calling the situation “dangerous” and pressing for urgent diplomatic engagement through the United Nations.
Despite increased cooperation with the United States, European leaders have sought to balance security support with diplomatic pressure. Paris and London have both stressed that they were not directly involved in the initial strikes but remain committed to preventing further escalation and protecting regional stability

Officials across Europe have reiterated calls for Iran to return to negotiations, particularly over nuclear tensions that have long underpinned confrontation between Tehran and Western powers.
Reactions beyond Western allies reveal deep geopolitical fractures.

Russia sharply criticised the military action, with President Vladimir Putin condemning what Moscow described as aggression against Iran and confirming ongoing contact with Iranian leadership.
China also called the escalation unacceptable and urged an immediate halt to military operations, reflecting broader concern among non-Western powers that the crisis could spiral into a prolonged international conflict.

Meanwhile, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres warned that continued military exchanges risk undermining international peace and security, calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities and a renewed focus on diplomacy.
Officials warn that international reactions in the coming days may determine whether the confrontation remains contained or expands into a broader global crisis.
