Showcasing 148 years of tradition and heritage, the exhibition offers visitors an interactive journey through the rich culinary traditions of The Championships. Through sights, sounds, and smells, guests have the opportunity to experience Wimbledon, all year-round.

‘A Slice of History’ highlights Wimbledon’s iconic offerings such as strawberries and cream and is topped with objects and stories relating to Wimbledon’s historic partnerships and hospitality offerings, whether that is food and drink served on the Tea Lawn, fine dining experiences in the Debentures and Members’ enclosures, or picnics brought into the Grounds and consumed on the famous Hill through the years.

The exhibition also examines the player experience, tracing the evolution of sports nutrition over the last century.

Additionally, it showcases player sponsorships, exploring how food and drink endorsements have become famously associated with both the athletes and the game.

Be transported back through the years of Wimbledon by the retro-adverts playing throughout the exhibit and the objects on display – a flavour of which are below:

Former Partnership: Coca-Cola, 1975-2007

Coca-Cola became an Official Partner of The Championships in 1975 and was a noticeable on-court presence with a drink dispenser installed on the back of the umpire’s chair – convenient for the players to refill their glasses between sets!

Maria Sharapova’s Sustainable ‘Mimesis’ Dress, 2021

Wimbledon and evian aim to keep everyone hydrated while promoting a culture of reuse, refill and recycle. In 2021, evian collaborated with eco-friendly fashion designer Iris van Herpen to create the first couture dress made from recycled bottles. Composed of 72% recycled plastic bottles and 28% organic silk, the dress showcases innovative techniques for recycling and reducing plastic waste. The dress was worn by former Wimbledon Champion and evian ambassador Maria Sharapova at the British Fashion Awards in 2021. This object is on loan from evian.

Former Partnership: Robinsons, 1935–2021

Robinsons Barley Water first debuted in player dressing rooms and gained recognition in 1935 when it was named the Official Soft Drink of The Championships. With its refreshing blend of British barley and zesty lemon juice, Robinsons quickly won over players, helping them combat dehydration. Both Tim Henman (above) and Andy Murray displayed the Robinsons’ logo on their kits at various points during their careers when competing at Wimbledon.

The partnership with The Championships lasted until 2021, leaving a lasting nostalgic impression among fans who remember the brand on umpires’ chairs and drink coolers.More than 100 food and drink-related items are on display as part of the exhibition, including match kits worn by Andy Murray and Serena Williams, and a range of heritage posters from iconic Wimbledon-associated brands, plus a 1968 Pimm’s bottle.

Objects from the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum archive and others kindly lent from Official Partners and well-known brands bring the story of Food and Drink at Wimbledon to life.

Emma Traherne, Senior Curator at the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum, said: “We are incredibly proud of the teamwork that went into curating ‘A Slice of History’ and bringing it to the Museum. Food and drink are such an essential, beloved part of The Championships, and this exhibition truly brings that story to life in a fun, interactive way that visitors haven’t seen before. We’ve uncovered fascinating stories about player nutrition, iconic brand partnerships, and, of course, the classic food and drinks. It’s a must-visit for any fan looking to experience the magic of The Championships all year round.”

This multisensory experience will appeal to children and adults alike. Visitors can smell the strawberries, pack a picnic on The Hill, flick through historical Wimbledon menus, pick up a supermarket scanner to discover which food and drink brands are linked to famous players, and find the golden strawberries placed throughout the exhibition.
