Roast’s Halloween Afternoon Tea transforms a British classic into a hauntingly elegant celebration of autumn, where rich flavours, playful desserts, and Borough Market’s golden glow come together for a seasonal indulgence with style

Perched above the bustle of Borough Market, Roast offers a lively yet refined escape. The Halloween Afternoon Tea setting leans into the seasonal spirit: warm-toned décor, subtle gothic touches (think pumpkins or dark accent pieces), and a view of the market’s vitality below.

Upon arrival, guests are greeted by atmospheric touches: carved pumpkins, subtle skeleton motifs, and soft ambient lighting that elevates what could otherwise be a standard tea service into something more theatrical. The location, above Borough Market, offers large windows that look out onto the market’s hustle, lending a vibrant backdrop to the experience. The mood feels festive but not gimmicky, sophisticated enough for adults seeking a little theatre with their tea, yet still playful in spirit.
The menu itself is a thoughtful balance of comfort and creativity. Savoury bites set the stage with classic British indulgence, a golden pork and sage scotch egg served with piccalilli sauce, a braised beef croquette topped with horseradish emulsion, and a pork and chorizo sausage roll laced with red pepper pesto. Each one offers that familiar Roast heartiness but reimagined for an afternoon tea stand rather than a Sunday platter. Even the sandwiches nod to the season, from pulled pork rolls with apple purée to beetroot gravlax on Nordic bread, it was an experience impossible to miss!

It’s in the sweet tier, however, that Roast truly leans into the Halloween theme. Mini confections arrive like edible art: a “Ghost Mushroom” meringue filled with vanilla cream and fresh berries, a glossy “Sweet Pumpkin Skull” a milk and dark chocolate mousse encasing pumpkin-seed praline and bergamot, and a “Spider Web” cake, a decadent chocolate sponge with coffee cream and raspberries. These desserts are more than just pretty; each has its own distinct texture and flavour story. Even the scones play along, served warm with clotted cream and a whisper of spiced jam.
The experience feels polished yet relaxed, with staff keeping the tone light and the service attentive. Tea drinkers will find familiar classics like Earl Grey and Sencha, while those looking to toast the season can opt for a glass of Veuve Clicquot or one of the restaurant’s Halloween-inspired cocktails, including the ominously named Petal & Poison and Pumpkilled.

Of course, this being Borough Market, a hint of bustle remains. Roast isn’t the hushed salon of Mayfair; it’s alive, occasionally loud, and very much a product of its surroundings. But that energy only adds to its charm; few places manage to feel both luxurious and genuinely fun at the same time.
A little trick, a lot of treat, and just enough glamour to make you wish October lasted a bit longer.
