As part of Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month, researchers from the University of Surrey are joining a national campaign to improve understanding and early detection of one of the UK’s deadliest cancers.

The University will host a free public event, “Can We Catch It Earlier? Pancreatic Cancer Awareness and Public Perspectives,” led by PhD researcher Hugh Claridge in partnership with the charity Pancreatic Cancer Action.

Pancreatic cancer remains among the most challenging cancers to treat, with UK survival rates showing little improvement over the past 40 years. Because symptoms are often vague and easily missed, experts say raising awareness and developing early detection tools are vital to saving lives.

The interactive session will bring together researchers, patients, and community members to discuss:

  • The early warning signs and challenges of diagnosing pancreatic cancer.
  • The latest research helping GPs identify potential cases sooner.
  • The personal experience of a pancreatic cancer survivor, sharing their journey of resilience and recovery.

A highlight of the event will be a live demonstration of a new digital risk assessment tool in development at Surrey. Using fictional medical records, attendees will see how the technology could help GPs flag potential pancreatic cancer cases earlier. Participants will also have the chance to provide feedback on the tool’s design, usability, and real-world potential.

“We want the public to be part of this process,” said Hugh Claridge, PhD researcher at the University of Surrey. “This event is about starting conversations, not just about pancreatic cancer, but about how we can work together to make early detection tools more effective and accessible for everyone.”

The event is open to all, with a particular invitation to those aged 50 and over, their families, carers, and community groups. No medical knowledge is required, only curiosity and a desire to make a difference.
